The sweet taste of success

MONTREAL - Endless roadwork is taking a grim toll on Park Ave.'s small businesses
Even the survivors - like Chocolats Andrée, a destination store that's been selling hand-crafted chocolates for decades - have been pinched.
"It's hurt, definitely. At one point, they put a chemical toilet right in front of the shop. It eventually got moved, but it still was there about a month," owner Stéphanie Saint-Denis said.
While many others have closed up or moved on since the construction disruption began more than two years ago - including another shortlived chocolate shop - Saint-Denis isn't going anywhere.
Chocolats Andrée has been at 5328 Park since it opened in 1940 and that's been instrumental in its success, the granddaughter of co-founder Madeleine Daigneault said.
"We have a good name, a great product and people know where we are. Consistency is what we stand for. But I must say, it's nice to have the Internet now as well, especially when it's difficult for customers to get to you. Last Christmas, almost 20 per cent of our sales were to clients we didn't see. They consulted our website and ordered by phone or email."
