Tarter: Nuts to all that
20.05.12
Businesses come and go in Downtown Peoria. Historic hotels may lock their doors and rated restaurants close kitchens but one business has carried on.
The Nut House, 311 Main St., has been a part of the downtown scene for more than 100 years. Not at the same location and with different owners, but always on the case.
Now owner Debbie Jackson has the business up for sale. She and her husband plan to retire and she feels it's time for new owners to take over this nutty treasure.
The Nut House is unique in a lot of ways. The narrow little store has cases on all sides - nuts to the right with candy front and left.
Like most downtowns, Peoria was once awash in window displays. Some may recall the fastidiously-designed Bergner's windows. In recent years, the only window display of note - the one that changes with the seasons - has been at the Nut House, where valentines rise with heart-shaped tins and hazelnuts, while St. Patrick's Day might blend four-leaf clovers and cashews.
