More than 60 years have passed since Zoe and Rudy Ruechel met as students at Center High School in Kansas City. Yet they clearly remember those early days.
Rudy was struck by Zoe’s Jean Paul Gaultier perfume, while Zoe was taken by Rudy’s singing voice.
The couple reminisced about the early days last week after being recognized for their long-lasting love as well as their community service.
During the Kearney Lions Club’s annual Valentine’s banquet, Olivia Gallo, a member of Kearney High School vocal quartet Bella Vita asked, “Who is the oldest couple here?”
The Ruechels’ 61 years of marriage beat out the other couples, earning them a serenade from the high school singers during the Thursday, Feb. 23, banquet at Kearney First United Methodist Church. The quartet sang barber shop tunes including “My Own Sweet Valentine” to the couple.
Later in the banquet, Lions Club Treasurer Jim Munkirs
