It's sunny days ahead for Ethel M Chocolate
Featuring 2,112 ground-mounted solar panels on 4.4 acres behind the back of its plant on 2 Cactus Garden Drive off Sunset Road in Henderson, Ethel M Chocolate Factory now boasts the largest solar installation of any food manufacturer in the state.
Together, the state-of-the-art installation generates 1,258 megawatt hours of zero-emission electricity annually, enough energy to power the Henderson factory during peak hours. The solar panels will generate as much energy as 115 Nevada households use yearly.
The production of this energy saves 825 tons of greenhouse gas from entering the atmosphere, which is equivalent to about 170 less vehicles on the roadways.
Mars Chocolate North America, makers of Ethel M chocolates, consider the new solar garden a big step toward sustainability.
"At Mars Chocolate North America, we have the opportunity to make a difference in the world." said Mike Wittman, vice president of supply. "We are proud of the investments we are making to ensure we are using the Earth's resources responsibly. This newest solar garden moves us closer to our goals of eliminating our carbon footprint at our sites by 2040 and using 100-percent renewable energy."
