Mrs. Wall’s third-grade class has been learning about different cultures. We studied cultures of Japan, China, Puerto Rico, and Senegal. Our favorite thing was learning how to read and write numbers from one to 10 using Chinese characters. They read from right to left, just the opposite of the way we read here in the U.S. On the past two Fridays, we were able to see and speak to two men in Afghanistan using Skype. It was fascinating to talk to Americans serving in a country on the other side of the world. We learned that schools there are not nearly as nice as ours. Soldiers and civilians stationed there are in danger every day and miss their homes and their families. Their living area is very small. They live near mountains and have snow on the ground now. These two men encouraged us to study hard and listen to our teachers when we told them we were working on long division and fractions.
