EASILY CONVERTED
We visit Bruges every two or three years. On our last trip, my husband said he
thought it had turned into a medieval Disneyland. But I don't agree. A
wonderfully peaceful and spiritual place to visit is the English Convent on
Carmersstraat ( the-english-convent.be ).
It was founded in 1629 as a place of exile for English Catholics. It is only
open for a short time in the afternoons. We were shown around the beautiful
Baroque church by a gentle sister, who explained the history of the order
and answered our questions enthusiastically. The visit is free but the
sisters will accept donations for their missions in Africa.
We ended our day with a stroll along the old ramparts by the canal to
Dampoort, passing some beautifully restored windmills.
