Do you get anything for your children on Valentines Day and if so what do you usually get them?

For owner, it's a bittersweet ending for Canaan Parish Sweet Shoppe

It has been the go-to candy shop for Halloween treats, Easter baskets, birthday surprises, Valentine's wishes and after-dinner delights, but after 37 years in operation — 13 in the hands of owner Ann Chou — Canaan Parish Sweet Shoppe is closing next month.

The economy and the inability to make rent and make a profit, as well as pay an employee to help her through the week, were the major factors in Chou's regrettable decision to close, she said. The store, located on South Avenue at the junction of Elm Street, will remain open through Easter.

While it has been rumored around town that the space has been rented, Hugh Halsell, listing agent and building owner, said the building is still for rent and that he's received several inquiries.

"... [It's] the store that has all the candy we had as children," said one customer on Monday, who cited the dark chocolate, coconut-cream eggs, among her favorites.
