Eighth-Grade Basketball
The St. Apollinaris March Madness Tournament tipped off Wednesday.
Here are the scores and highlights:
• Girls Bracket
St. John’s Catholic made a tremendous comeback over Holy Spirit after being down by three points with less then a minute to go. Kimmy Fernandez made two of her 20 points on a driving basket with 10 seconds to go and St. John’s held on to win, 38-37. Holy Spirit was led by Mikayla Balmaceda’s 15 points.
St. Basil’s defeated St. Rose in a see-saw battle, 32-26. Both teams played great, with Alyssa Sanderson leading St. Basil’s with 13 points and Lydia Brueggmann scoring nine for St. Rose.
St. Apollinaris defeated Annette’s Chocolate, 34-16. It was a total team effort for the winners as Gianna Gagetta and Erin Mills led the way with 10 points apiece. Annette’s played hard to the end.
• Boys Bracket
With only one game on the schedule, Holy Spirit used its size and strength inside the key hand St. John’s Catholic of Napa a 47-36 defeat. Holy Spirit was powered by 6-foot-1 Dominic Maes with 19 points, while 5-9 Julian Bactad also played well. For St. John’s, Aaron Hercules and Dan Clark had 13 points apiece.
