No more chocolate milk at school?
Mini-cartons of chocolate milk — the sweet lunch-tray staple for thousands of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County students — may soon be gone from the district's schools, as officials attempt to decrease sugar and fight obesity.
Superintendent Don Martin said last week that he's convinced that getting rid of chocolate milk is "a change worth making," though he's not ready to formally recommend it. A review committee is expected to look at the issue, and the school board will discuss the matter before anything is final.
But several board members said last week that they're likely to support the change, and the board often implements Martin's suggestions with little delay.
Chocolate milk accounts for 76 percent of the milk the system sells, according to a breakdown from the system's nutrition program. But Martin's quasi-decision comes after gentle prodding from school board attorney Allison Tomberlin, who has been sending him statistics on chocolate milk's sugar content, as well as on childhood obesity.
