Matt Fraction embraces the weirdness of 'The Defenders'

Fortunately for Marvel Comics fans, "weird" takes up a good amount of writer Matt Fraction's wheelhouse.
Fraction gets the band back together starting today in a brand-new The Defenders series, drawn by Terry Dodson. The first incarnation of the team in 1971 featured Doctor Strange, the Hulk, Namor the Sub-Mariner and the Silver Surfer . This version of ultimate specialists swaps out Hulk for his one-time spouse, Red She-Hulk, and adds mystical martial artist Iron Fist .

"The Defenders protect us all from the impossible," the writer says. "It's more than, well, we need six guys punching this thing instead of just one. They're protecting us from vast cosmic threats that are very big and beyond even good and evil."
Don't know anything about the old Defenders? No worries — Fraction certainly didn't when he started, he says. He was never a fan of the original 1970s series so he had no particular nostalgic fondness for the book.
