New cake shop opens downtown

Sweets are returning to 23 W. Main St. in a different form. The former location of Lillie Mae Candies is now home to Las Yaquesitas, a cake and goodies shop.

Owner Raquel Carrera has lived in Marshalltown for 12 years and formerly worked at JBS. In her spare time, she has made cakes out of her home for parties and decided to take it to another level.

"I've always liked to make cakes for our kids," Carrera said through an interpreter. "When people come to our birthday parties they say 'Why don't you sell your cakes.'"

The family business offers regular cakes, cheesecakes, flan, cookies, milk shakes and other sweets. Carrera, who got her start in food service packaging bread in Mexico, said she likes the downtown location of the store.

"The opportunity presented itself so I grabbed it," she said.

The business is now open and regular hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Cakes also can be pre-ordered and usually take a day to be made and there is also free delivery in Marshalltown. For more information about the business call 641-753-5078.

caramel apples are back

I love the way a bushel of apples looks after being shined - it screams fall to me. We then stick an apple stick in the apple and wait for the temperature of the caramel to get to the right spot. Many of the Lillie Mae Chocolate followers who love our caramel apples have no idea how we make them. We then dip the apples twice to make sure there is a very thick caramel on each apple. We use Johnathan's the majority of the season for the tart crisp apple - it blends great with our soft caramel.
