Olympian shares her challenges on quest for gold
Olympic medalist Lauryn Williams pauses between the chicken soup, the green salad, the chicken kebob and the chocolate mousse at Pasha’s in Coral Gables to reveal why she’s putting herself through the rigorous paces required to qualify for her third Olympics in track and field next year in London.
It’s not just to collect another medal — she has a silver from the 2004 Olympics amid a slew of world championship honors in the 100-meter sprint, her event — though winning certainly is her goal.
It’s not just because this is her job and her sponsors — from Pasha’s, Robeks Juices and Whole Foods for her food needs to Saucony for her racing shoes and ChicaBands for her headbands — expect results.
Rather, it’s to serve as an example to others.
“That’s the stuff that makes it worth it,” she says between bites, after a grueling session on the University of Miami track with her coach, UM track and field director Amy Deem who, in February, was named the women’s coach for Team USA at the 2012 Olympics in London.
