Remember When: A community review of Tonganoxie

(Caption under picture) Lenny Lawson joked with two of his grandchildren as his 58th birthday party took place on the front porch of his rural Tonganoxie home in May. Lawson died on Sunday in a helicopter accident in Missouri. (Mr. Lawson and Richard Inlow, 59, Bonner Springs, were killed in this accident.)
Deaths: Lulu M. Coulter, 91, Lawrence, died July 22, 2001; G. A. Emerson, Jr., 77, Midlothian, Va., died Feb. 14, 2001; Leonard W. Larson, Jr., 58, Tonganoxie, died July 22, 2001; James A. "Jim" Petrie, 61, McLouth, died July 17, 2001; Charlotte L. Tichenor, formerly of Edwardsville, age 66, died July 16, in Omaha.
The county drug dogs now are vested. Thanks to a drive started by Kathleen Farley, Leavenworth, funds have been raised to purchase vests to protect drug dogs from bullets and knives. Leavenworth County and the city of Leavenworth own the dogs. The three vests, about $500 each, are constructed of the same material as protective vests worn by officers.
