Nunu Chocolates satisfies sweet tooths in Brooklyn
Much to their surprise, the stores said yes, bringing Nunu Chocolates (the name comes from a South African term that Pringle was called as a child) to an even bigger audience.
Pringle and Laird, who still had day jobs, rented kitchen space, first in Brooklyn, then in Queens, to keep up with growing demand.
Eventually, they set up shop at the Brooklyn Flea before opening their current brick-and-mortar location on Atlantic Ave.
Because the pair had no prior chocolate-making experience, Pringle and Laird jumped right into experimenting.
“It’s funny because even the mistakes are pretty tasty so it’s not the worst thing in the world to dive right into,” says Laird. “At one point, Justine also studied at Ecole Chocolat online, but for the most part, we found that chocolate is so temperamental, you just have to do it.”
Adds Pringle: “The only trick is to use ingredients that you really like. It's tough to get something right if you're not wild about it.”
